The biggest ‘Ballroom Brawl’ in Melbourne City Wrestling history is in the books, and what a night of twists and turns it was! Here’s a quick rundown of what happened on this monumental evening…
MCW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS – The Brat Pack def. Fun Time Trouble
Nick Bury, Mitch Waterman and Avary did everything they could to overcome the onslaught from Mike Burr & Fun Time Phil, and in the end, they would cheat their way into making a successful first defense of the MCW Tag Team Championships.
After the match though, they would immediately be faced with a new set of challengers, as pAnic made their return to Melbourne City Wrestling. Syd Parker and the Psycho Cowboy would spit dual mists into the faces of the champions, as Erika Reid kept Avary at bay.
JXT def. Johnathan Preston
The rivalry between JXT and Johnathan Preston continued, and when it seemed like Preston had JXT beat, Alan Payne’s music hit, though it was an imposter Alan Payne who would appear on the ramp. The mind games from Johnathan Preston’s former tag team partner allowed JXT to pick up the victory.
Lochy Hendricks def. Davis Storm
In what was a predominantly one sided affair, Lochy Hendricks would defeat the man that his mentor KrackerJak could not, as he scored the victory over ‘The Messiah’ Davis Storm. After the bout, Storm was quick to grab the mic, telling Lochy that always knew that Hendricks was better than KrackerJak.
BALLROOM BRAWL RUMBLE – Jonah Rock becomes the new number one contender for the MCW Heavyweight Championship
The shock return of Jonah Rock to MCW brought the sold out Thornbury Theatre to its feet, and he would go on to win the Ballroom Brawl Rumble, becoming the number one contender for the MCW Heavyweight Championship. JXT would be the last man eliminated from the match, making it the third year in a row that he has been the final competitor to be eliminated.
As always, the championship opportunity awarded to the winner of the Ballroom Brawl Rumble is able to be cashed in at any time of that competitors choosing, and as you’ll find out, it would not be the last time we’d see Jonah Rock in action for the evening.
MCW INTERCOMMONWEALTH CHAMPIONSHIP – Will Ospreay def. Adam Brooks
On paper, this championship match always seemed destined to steal the show, but nothing could prepare the record breaking crowd in attendance for the spectacle that took place for the MCW Intercommonwealth Championship. Simply put: this match needs to be seen to be believed.
When the smoke cleared from a hellacious back and forth war, it was ‘The Aerial Assassin’ Will Ospreay who would defeat Adam Brooks to become the new MCW Intercommonwealth Champion. Following the match, Ospreay would grab the microphone, declaring his intentions to move to Australia and become a fully fledged citizen. He would go on to announce that he would bring the world’s best to Melbourne City Wrestling, and that he would carry the company on his shoulders, in order to make sure that MCW garnered the recognition it deserves on the world stage.
MADISON EAGLES’ GAUNTLET – Kelly Anne def. Bea Priestley
In a hard fought battle both in and outside the ring, Kelly Anne would turn back the challenge from the UK’s Bea Priestley. Madison Eagles herself appeared on the screens following the match, declaring that she would be be Kelly Anne’s next challenge, with the bout slated to take place at our next event, MCW New Horizons, which takes place at the Arrow on Swanston Ballroom on Saturday August 19th. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from this link, or at the venue on the night.
MCW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Mr Juicy vs. Dowie James
In our main event, the highly anticipated rematch between Mr Juicy and Dowie James saw neither competitor walk out with the MCW Heavyweight Championship. As Dowie James clambered to the top rope rope to deliver a frog splash, Jonah Rock stormed to the ring, cashing in his championship opportunity that he’d won earlier in the evening. Jonah would shove Dowie James to the floor, and then hit a MASSIVE top rope splash of his own, pinning Mr Juicy, and becoming the NEW MCW Heavyweight Champion, in a shocking close to Ballroom Brawl!
There will be no rest for the Melbourne City Wrestling team, as our biggest lineup in company history, MCW New Horizons, takes place at the Arrow on Swanston Ballroom on Saturday August 19th. Reserved seating pre-sale tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from this link, and we have a very special preview video now online, with a stack of competitors announced so far, including Will Ospreay and Bullet Club member ‘Bad Luck’ Fale!
